Leo Liangda Hu is a New York–based dramaturg and playwright. He holds a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Performance from New York University’s Steinhardt School, as well as a Master’s degree in Drama and Film Study from the Central Academy of Drama in China.Before moving to the United States, Leo worked both on stage and behind the scenes. He served as a director and dramaturg in Beiyang Drama Club in Tianjin University for about 10years, and in 2016 he directed Beijinger, a play written by Cao Yu. The first performance of this production drew nearly 600 audiences and this production itself also received media coverage, including one by Tonight News.Leo’s performance credits include soloist engagements at the Cloud Nine concert at 54 Below (2023). In December 2023, he played a leading role in the operetta Amahl and the Night Visitors, receiving an enthusiastic audience response. Since relocating to New York, Leo's artistic work continues to explore storytelling across cultures. In November 2025, the staged reading version of the play Mr. Ma’s in New York, written by him, was produced with funding from Dreamborne, and he served as the dramaturg for this production. The play is adapted from Lao She’s novel Mr. Ma and His Son and tells the story of a Chinese immigrant family and a Jewish family in the 1990s. The production received widespread acclaim and was covered by multiple media outlets, including AP News.

During leo‘s time living in New York, he developed close connections with multiple Jewish communities. These experiences fostered in him a deep respect for Jewish culture, which spans thousands of years, and he was profoundly moved by the warmth, kindness, and commitment to tradition within these communities. This journey led him to begin the process of converting to Judaism, culminating in his formal joining of the People of Israel in March 2026. His creative work is deeply rooted in two ancient cultures, exploring the mutual inspiration and resonance between Chinese and Jewish traditions.
